Q: I have been receiving strange billing from a long distance carrier. What is this?
A: Your long distance provider may have been switched without you knowing it. A Preferred Carrier Freeze (PIC) is a way of preventing your long distance service from being switched without your permission. Slamming is a process in which one long distance carrier changes your current long distance services without your authorization.

Q: If I disconnect my phone for the winter months, will I lose my number?
A: If you reconnect within 1 year you will receive your same number.

Q: What is the difference between an unlisted and a non-published number?
A: An unlisted number will not be printed in the directory, but directory assistance will give out the number. A non-published number is not printed in the directory and directory assistance will not give out the number.

Q: What is the deadline to add a listing to the directory?
A: To have a listing print in the current directory your service must be active by the end of April.

Q: What is the $6.00 charge that shows up on my bill?
A: It is the Federal Subscriber Line Charge which was established by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and assessed directly to customers to help local telephone companies recover some of their costs in construction and maintaining the local network.

Q: Someone contacted me today stating they were with the local telephone company and can save me money. Is this legitimate?
A: Typically this is a telemarketer looking to change your long distance service. Often times they can't even tell you who the local telephone company is. Have them remove your name from their telemarketing list.

Q: What is a lata and what is the difference between inter and intra lata?
A: A lata is a geographic area within which the local telephone company provides local and long distance services. If you call witin your lata, the call is intra lata. If you call outside your lata, the call is an inter lata call. North Dakota has two latas, the Fargo-Brainerd lata which includes Carrington and Jamestown and the Bismarck lata.
